Genera Stanley McCrystal has been relieved of his command over Afghanistan today. The General was summoned to the White House after derogatory statements made against White House officials including President Obama and Vice President Biden in a ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine interview.

General McCrystal met with the President today for nearly one-half hour at which point he exited the premise and did not attend the Afghanistan Strategy meeting scheduled for today.

President Obama news conference at 1:44p today made official the termination of General McCrystal. His successor to the command of American troops in Afghanistan is General David Petraeus. General Petraeus’ command has now been extended over the Iraq and Afghanistan regions.

President Obama’s swift decision has resolved two key issues of strategic significance in his ability to lead the country. One, Obama exuded an image of control and intolerance to insubordinate staff.  Two, the President was able to have in place a qualified, experience successor to assume the responsibilities of the command over Afghanistan.
