Recently Jay-z revealed the discussion he had with his mother, Gloria Carter, and her coming out as a lesbian.

“That’s a real story. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free,” JAY said.

The rapper also stated he knew that his mother was gay, but their first conversation on the subject didn’t occur until he was in the process of making 4:44 track “Smile.”

“She gained courage and sat in front of me, telling me that ‘I think I love someone’ – I mean, I cried,” the rapper said.

His mom, Gloria Carter, says she wrote “Living in the Shadows,” her poem featured on “Smile,” during the plane ride on his 2017 album, 4:44.

“Living in the shadow, people see you as happy and free/because that’s what you want them to see/Living two lives, happy, but not free,” she wrote.

The rapper never discussed her mom’s sexuality openly until he was working on the album. JAY recorded “Smile” the day after they spoke.

“Smile” went on to become one of the most buzzed-about songs on “4:44,” featuring a spoken-word outro from Gloria Carter herself.

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” Jay-Z raps on the song. “Had to hide in the closet. So she medicates /Society shame and the pain was too much to take.”

Gloria Carter talked about the track in an interview with the D’usse Friday podcast in September last year, saying that although she was “never ashamed” of her private life, it was “never discussed” among her family members.

“I don’t hide my identity. I’m tired of all the mystery,” Gloria said at the time. “Now it’s time for me to believe my life and be happy, be free.”
