For years, Mariah Carey has been avoiding sharing that she has a bipolar disease even after several diagnoses. But now the hit-making star is proud to share her experience on what her condition entails and the struggle she went through.

In a People magazine cover story, Carey talks about having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and where she is today.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” the singer said.

“It was a heavy burden to carry and I couldn’t do that anymore. That’s why I sought and received treatment, putting positive people around me and getting back to doing what I love; writing songs and making music.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, bipolar disorder is “a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs and lows.

Carey was first diagnosed with the condition in 2001 when she was hospitalized following a breakdown. She sought treatment after years of upheaval in her professional and personal life.

Carey told the outlet she is now in therapy and taking medication for bipolar II disorder. She also revealed that her medication is working well.

“The condition is not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that,” the singer said. “What is most important is finding the proper balance.”

Carey, who is divorced from actor Nick Cannon said she is grateful to be sharing this part of her journey. She also shares 6-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with Cannon.

She said she decided to go public now because she felt she was just in the right place where she feels comfortable discussing her struggles with bipolar II disorder.

“I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone,” Carey said. “It can be incredibly isolating. It doesn’t have to define you, and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”

The pop star is now working on a new album to be released later this year. Carey was one of the best-selling music artists in the world with 200 million records sold and hits as We Belong Together.

Her primary reason for taking the medication is to overcome the feeling of tiredness or sluggishness while working on new music.
