COLUMBUS: A divided Ohio House has approved a bill that would set up rules for how much water farms and factories can draw from Lake Erie and the rivers flowing into it.
The measure cleared the Republican-led chamber 59-38 Wednesday, despite objections from Democrats. It now goes to the Senate.
The legislation would lay out Ohio’s part in the Great Lakes Compact between eight states and two Canadian provinces that border the lakes. Lawmakers voted on the bill after Gov. John Kasich vetoed an earlier version.
Two former governors, environmental groups and anglers say the bill fails to adequately protect the lakes. GOP Rep. Lynn Wachtmann of northwest Ohio, who sponsored the bill, says it protects the environment and helps businesses and towns along the water.
