On Tuesday, after last week’s Tipoff item about new $20 late fees for motorists who drag their feet getting license and registration renewals, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles sent this reminder to folks on its e-mail list:

“This is a friendly reminder about a change in Ohio driver license and vehicle registration law. Starting Oct. 1, 2009, the BMV has been required to impose a $20 late fee on all late driver license and vehicle registration renewals. There is a seven-day grace period associated with the late fee.”

The BMV also is placing posters at each of its offices and is looking at putting reminders on mailer envelopes.

It’s a few months late and about $6.5 million short for some folks, including those who complained on cleveland.com last week.

From October through December, the late fees brought in that amount, with nearly 250,000 people registering their vehicles too late and another 80,000-plus renewing their driver’s licenses too late.

Reminder or not, that’s not so friendly.

Have your say!
