Cleveland: A Celebration of Cultures, curated by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage and Cleveland State University, returns for a limited engagement. Presented last October along with artifacts and performances, the main portion focusing on the Cleveland Cultural Gardens (CCG) returns through January, 2010.

It features material and photographs on each of 25 gardens and four that are planned (Albanian, Armenian, Croatian and Syrian). Covering 1.5 miles in University Circle’s Rockefeller Park, CCG was created as a lasting tribute to peace, harmony and mutual understanding after World War I. The first of the nationality gardens was the Hebrew, established in 1926.
“We had such great reaction that we decided to bring it back,” says Judi Feniger, Executive Director, Maltz Museum. “After each exhibition, we hear from people disappointed they didn’t quite get here in time. While most of our exhibitions come from other cities and are only here for a short time, this one belongs to us. We recently added a gallery hanging system, so we were able to reinstall it ourselves”.
The gardens are a lasting legacy of our region’s diverse ethnic heritages. Cultural heritage groups plan, fund and maintain their own garden, and work cooperatively with the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation. Learn more at www.culturalgardens.org.
Dr. Mark Tebeau, Department of History, Cleveland State University, notes, “These Gardens reveal the history of immigration to, and migration within, the United States; stories of the major conflicts that gave shape to the century and insight into the large social, economic, political and cultural upheavals that roiled through the nation, including the Great Depression, suburbanization, the Civil Rights Movement, and the deindustrialization of America’s heartland.”
