A documentary that follows a billionaire couple as they begin construction on a mansion inspired by Versailles. During the next two years, their empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis.

The Buzz: Controversial even before its Sundance debut (subject David Siegel sued the festival for their use of the phrase “rags to riches to rags” to describe their fortune losses), Lauren Greenfield’s documentary captivated the Park City crowd and took home the directing award in its category. Magnolia Pictures has had a few major documentary successes — Food, Inc., Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and most recently Jiro Dreams of Sushi — so this insider look at the 1% should have no trouble reaching its audiences and stirring their respective pots. But the true reason Greenfield has earned accolades for her work here is for her humanism.
