Plies Thanks Young Jeezy For The ‘Opportunity’ To Collaborate!

‘It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse,’ Plies tells Mixtape Daily of ‘Lose My Mind.’

Plies and Young Jeezy have an obvious respect for each other. If you know either one of the Southern street champs, you know they won’t do collaborations with just anybody.

Plies just released the song “Look Like,” featuring Jeezy and Fabolous, which comes on the heels of the underground record “So Bad” that leaked last year and the Snowman’s current club anthem “Lose My Mind.”

YOUNG JEEZY FT PLIES LOSE MY MIND

“For me, bruh, to have an opportunity to create the situation I created with my brother and to have an artist from a record-selling standpoint and accomplish what the Snowman accomplished and to reach out to us and allow us to know there was a situation he wanted us to be a part of, it speaks a lot to what we gained and built in this business,” Plies said of being on “Lose My Mind.” “It speaks a lot of him as a person. A lot of times in this game, a lot of cats can respect you and be scared to show you they respect you. I take my hat to him for it. It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse and watch the record respond out of the gate like it is in the clubs and in the streets. I think we got a hell of a situation.

“He hit me the other day, and I told him he has a song that I consider to be a street antique,” Plies added. “To pick and choose the records we do is the most important thing. I always told myself from day one: I’ll never be a music whore when it came to this business. I always wanted to make sure I did in my heart what I felt was the right things to do. To get myself in a financial space where I don’t have to make desperate decisions, I feel we accomplished that thus far. I’m gonna try to continue to make more right moves than wrong moves.”

Although the version of “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” that appeared on Raymond v. Raymond doesn’t feature Plies’ verse that rocked on radio this winter, the Florida native didn’t have anything negative to say about working with Usher.

“It was good,” Plies said about the experience. “I was on my way to New York. My brother actually got the call. They say they needed the record back in a couple of hours. I didn’t hear the record. My brother, he didn’t have to let me hear it. He said, ‘It’s a go, bruh.’ I got the record, they called back, said they needed it in an hour. Ran to the studio, had my assistant push my flight back. We heard the record; we felt the record was great.”

Slakah the Beatchild may be new to the Booth, but he’s clearly an old soul; on new single Enjoy Ya Self (Version 2), the up-and-coming singer/producer teams up with established Booth favorite and fellow Toronto native Drake (not present on the original album cut) to channel “De La Soul by way of Marvin Gaye.”

SLAKAH THE BEATCHILD ‘ENJOY YA SELF V2′ VIDEO

That snippet from Slakah’s hook does a pretty good job of summing up the record’s sound—as you’d expect, the artist’s own boardwork is about as mellow as mellow gets, and its airy, jazzy guitar groove proves a fitting backdrop for his soulful yet never showy vocal stylings. Also unsurprisingly, Drake’s flow couldn’t be a better fit; his opening contribution is fairly brief, but if you’re digging on the record’s old-school feel, you’re sure to appreciate the laid-back braggadocio with which he brushes off the competition. With the “feel-good, real-good vibe” Slakah’s cooked up here, it’s hard not to kick back and simply do as the title says. If you need a soundtrack for those lazy summer days we’re all looking forward to, jump on board the Beatchild’s Soul Movement on May 26th, when Vol. 1 of his LP hits North American shores.

GYPTIAN’S CAREER RESURRECTED BY ‘HOLD YUH’

IT’S been five years since he shot onto the musical radar with the chart-topping and thought-provoking single Serious Times. Since then he has racked up a handful of minor hits including Mama Don’t Cry, I Can Feel Your Pain and Beautiful Lady.

Now singer Gyptian and record label VP Records have thrown their muscle behind his latest hit Hold Yuh, which is currently heating up crossover radio stations stateside.

GYPTIAN HOLD YUH VIDEO

Hold Yuh, which was recorded two years ago, was produced by Ricky Blaze. “Hold Yuh is more like a vibes song. Is a natural reggae song that combines a mixture of everything,” Gyptian said in an interview on the set of the video shoot for the single.
Hold Yuh is already in the top five on influential urban radio station Hot 97 FM’s playlist. According to Cristy Barber, vice president for Marketing and Promotions at VP Records, the radio story for Hold Yuh has just begun. “The digital single is number two on I-tunes and the track is getting a lot of attention at crossover radio in America right now. It’s a simple reggae song with that crossover vibe to it and we’re getting the video done to capitalise on the potential of the song.”
Not much has been heard of Gyptian in recent times; however, he remains quite active performing overseas at regular intervals as well as recording for various producers.
Asked whether he was surprised at the reception that Hold Yuh has been receiving stateside, Gyptian said, “My song dem always a tek off outside of Jamaica before getting any attention in Jamaica. So it’s not a surprise to me really.”
Barber pointed to the fact that locally radio stations have not supported Hold Yuh. “The song isn’t getting any mileage, in Jamaica but on the other hand, its getting lots of attention in America and across the Caribbean. The song has gotten around 500 hits on YouTube within the past week.”
Gyptian is already working on his third album for VP. The album is tentatively titled Hold Yuh. Jus One, FX and Ricky Blaze are the producers who have already contributed to the project. “We’re looking at dropping the album around July and if everyone in Jamaica buys a copy, I am sure it can sell a million,” Gyptian said jokingly.
Asked what fans can expect on the forthcoming album, Gyptian said, “More versatility, growth and the progress that Gyptian has made lyrically.”
Gyptian’s debut album My Name is Gyptian was released in 2006. Two years later I Can Feel Your Pain peaked at number four on Billboard’s Reggae album chart.-The Observer

ALICIA KEYS FALLS FOR CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY IN ‘UNTHINKABLE’ VIDEO@

“If we do the unthinkable,” Alicia Keys wonders in the chorus of her latest single, “would it make us look crazy?” Her dramatic new video for “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)” imagines that choice as one involving One Tree Hill hunk Chad Michael Murray.

ALICIA KEYS UNTHINKABLE-I’M READY VIDEO

The clip jumps around freely from the 1950s to the present day and everything in between. In all of those eras, Keys’ character falls for Murray’s, only to face the scorn of relatives and neighbors. This, a press release from Keys’ label explains, was meant to “capture…the torment and turmoil of a forbidden love that crosses racial and family ties” and “question…whether or not true love really conquers all.”

So, does true love really conquer all? Would a relationship between Keys and Murray still be unthinkable to some people in 2010? What do you think of this video, anyway? Check out “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” after the jump and let us know.

The lord giveth, and the lord taketh away. On the same day that Lil Wayne finally heads off to jail for an eight month bid, the long-imprisoned and still King of the South T.I. has decided to begin his comeback tour with his aptly named new single I’m Back. If you were wondering if prison would change T.I.’s sound, it hasn’t; I’m Back sounds like it could have come off King, right down to the triumphantly epic, trap music beat from The Trackslayerz (although T.I. has played down the more overt gun talk).

T.I. I’M BACK VIDEO

In the end though, as always, I’m Back is T.I.’s show, as he immediately sets out to remind any challengers that may have sprung up during his absence who still rules the South: “No matter what they doin they don’t do it like me.” Ain’t that the truth. I’m Back is off T.I.’s still untitled new album (due out this August), meaning that for now you’ll just have to be patient and enjoy some new music from Clifford Harris. It’s been far too long.

“Nothin’ On You” is shaping up to be a breakout hit for the ATL-based rapper/musician/producer, earning both immediate acclaim and popular success. The track has ascended to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Rhythmic Airplay” chart — the fastest rising debut track since Drake’s 2009 smash, “Best I Ever Had” — while also reaching #16 on Billboard’s “Hot 100″ with 257,097 units sold to date. What’s more, Billboard praised “Nothin’ On You” for its “feel-good singalong hook,” noting that the single “provides a solid launching pad for this promising talent.”

Having spent much of last year sharing stages with such like-minded artists as Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, and Shwayze, B.o.B will herald the release of “B.o.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray” with a full-scale US tour. The dates — supporting 1st & 15th /Atlantic labelmate Lupe Fiasco’s “Steppin Laser Tour” — began Friday, March 5th at Claremont, California’s Bridges Auditorium and continues through early May.

One of hip-hop’s most inventive and exciting young artists, B.o.B has quickly drawn a bounty of rapturous critical applause. In its 2010 “Faces To Watch” feature, Billboard celebrated the rapper’s “versatility,” declaring that he “recalls both OutKast’s Big Boi and crooner Raheem DeVaughn and may be the first rapper to play the guitar well.” XXL — which named B.o.B among its “10 Freshmen of 2009″ — called him “ready for stardom,” while John Ivey, program director at Los Angeles’ influential KIIS-FM, told Entertainment Weekly that the multi-talented MC is his pick for “next big thing,” explaining that “a lot of hip-hop guys are just rappers, but (B.o.B) plays guitar and just kills it.” Smooth celebrated B.o.B’s “virtuosic talent” and “lyrical directness,” while Ozone called him “one of the most anticipated newcomers in the game.” Nylon hailed B.o.B as a leading figure of “a new generation of hip-hop upstarts” and the Wall Street Journal concurred, praising the MC for “testing the genre’s conventions.” Additional profiles have appeared in such publications as Complex and Paste, which included B.o.B in its “The Best of What’s Next ‘09″ round-up.

“B.o.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray” sees the resourceful rapper producing the majority of the album by himself, while also playing multiple musical instruments, including piano, trumpet and French horn. In addition, tracks such as “5th Dimension” and “Friday Night Star” offer a funky and fascinating journey into a gifted new talent’s far-reaching imagination.

“I just want to show people that there are endless possibilities of what you can do,” B.o.B says. “You don’t just have to be a rapper, you don’t just have to be a trapper; you can be anything you want to be and whatever you do, just love it and it will show.”

Born Bobby Ray Simmons, B.o.B is already a significant force in Southern hip-hop, having captured underground interest with a variety of mixtapes and his smokers anthem, “Cloud 9.” In 2006, while he was still attending high school, the accomplished musician and producer came to the attention of renowned producer/songwriter Jim Jonsin (Lil’ Wayne, Pretty Ricky, Twista, Danity Kane, Trick Daddy), who promptly signed the young MC to his Rebel Rock Entertainment label.

B.o.B scored a breakthrough hit in 2008 with the smash single/video, “Haterz Everywhere,” which was an MTV “Jam of the Week” as well as a top 10 hit on the network’s Sucker Free Countdown. A number of blockbuster mixtapes followed, including 2009’s celebrated “B.o.B VS. BOBBY RAY” (available at B.o.B’s own http://bobmixtapes.wordpress.com). As if all that weren’t enough, the much-admired rapper teamed up with Reebok on a unique reinterpretation of A Tribe Called Quest’s classic “Bonita Applebum” in celebration of the Reebok Classic Remix collection.

A wide range of media attention greeted B.o.B’s arrival on the hip-hop scene, with features and reviews appearing in such national publications and online outlets as The Source, Complex, Spin, URB, XXL, Fader, Rolling Stone, and Murderdog. Vibe recently hailed his leading role in the emerging ATL sound, noting that “a musical renaissance has begun to take shape, and locals like B.o.B are putting a new movement in motion.”

B.o.B. also established a major presence online, having now logged over 21 million total plays at his official MySpace page, www.myspace.com/bobatl. In addition, his official website, www.bobatl.com includes tons of exclusive tracks, videos and user-generated features.

NEW YORK — In the months after her husband died, Corinne Bailey Rae was fixated on the grieving process — specifically, whether there is a right and a wrong way to mourn.

It’s not as if Rae acted inappropriately after the death of Jason Rae from a drug overdose in 2008. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, who dazzled the music world in 2006 with her sunny, silky self-titled debut, dropped out of sight after the tragedy.

CORINNE BAILEY RAE I’D DO IT ALL AGAIN VIDEO

She spent a good part of her day simply resting and, when she felt like it, taking walks or spending time with loved ones.

She was in a haze, not knowing how to go forward after the destiny she thought she had was forever altered.

“I’m not familiar with that kind of shock that lasts all that amount of time,” the 30-year-old recalls. “It just sort of takes ages to sink it. You feel it, and then you don’t feel it; you know what’s happened, and then you don’t really know what happened. …

“Somebody wrote me a letter saying that you need to surrender to it, which I was like, ‘Well, how do I surrender?’ ”

Rae has determined that the grieving process is different for everyone. For her, it included channeling her emotions into her music. The result is her touching, tender new album, “The Sea,” started before the death of her husband but finished more than a year later.

“There are other people that have had these similar experiences … all different kinds of loss, and I feel like a lot of people don’t really sing about it in popular music,” says an upbeat, reflective Rae, on national tour that comes to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom tonight.

“I want to be that one voice that is saying that this is also a human experience that is worth making music about.”

When Rae first started working on “The Sea,” she was determined to make an album that grew from the dreamy, groove-based tunes — such as “Put Your Records On” — that were becoming her signature. She was looking for sounds that were more aggressive, funky and complex.

“I wanted to make another record that was a partner to, and an answer to, the first album,” the British musician says of her debut CD, which sold more than 1 million copies in the United States alone. “I wanted to write something that was able to match that excitement that we’d feel in the audience.”

She had started working on new music when her 31-year-old husband, a recovering addict, was found dead because of an overdose of methadone. In the aftermath, Rae found herself struggling to adapt to a role she never anticipated: widow.

“Part of that … experience is you can’t imagine a future,” Rae says.

Rae, who lives in Leeds, England, didn’t work on new music but found her mind occupied with other thoughts. She became engrossed in etymology, the study of words, and found parallels in language to her own situation: —‰’Grief,’ it’s from ‘grave,’ which means heavy. It’s a thing that lands on you, and there is nothing you can do to sort of make it work.”

It took months for her to cope through her music. When asked what she did, she simply says: “Nothing.”

“(I went) from being a really active person, from having a really full diary, to doing absolutely nothing because I had no interest in doing anything.”

She decided to start working on “The Sea” again because she missed creating and because she needed a goal: “I needed to have something to do. The main thing that this album has given me is something to do to take up my time.”

“The Sea” is not mournful — there are driving grooves, sultry odes and sweet tunes. But it does contain several songs that refer to her husband’s death. The album’s first song, the wistful “Are You Here,” speaks to the confusion of feeling the presence of someone no longer around: “Are you here, ’cause my heart recalls it all feels the same?”

“I Would Like to Call It Beauty” is the song that most explicitly deals with death. It’s named for a phrase uttered by Jason Rae’s brother, Phillip (Rae even gave him song credit). The song’s first lines are: “So young for death, we walk in shoes too big, but you play it like a poet, like you always did.”

“It’s a way different record than the initial idea that she had in her head, but I think it was very necessary,” says Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, the Roots bandleader who worked on the rocking “The Blackest Lily,” recorded before Jason Rae’s death.

“If anything, this album sort of provides a kind of resolution to public mourning,” he says.

But for Rae, nothing is resolved: She is trying to figure out how to move on.

“The shock of it is still really with me,” she says. “It’s hard to imagine that it’s not going to go back to how it was.”
