Scarface began his career as Akshen (pronounced Action) recording solo for Lil’ Troy’s Short Stop Records, a local label in Houston.

He would go on to sign with Rap-A-Lot Records and join a group who were collectively known as Geto Boys replacing one member who left, and released the group’s second album Grip It! On That Other Level (1989), a highly successful LP that garnered the group a large fanbase, in spite of their violent lyrics keeping them from radio and MTV. He took his stage name from the 1983 film Scarface.

The album Mr. Scarface Is Back was a success, and Scarface’s popularity soon overshadowed the other Geto Boys. Scarface remained in the group while releasing a series of solo albums that kept him in the public view with increasing sales. This peaked with The Diary and The Last of a Dying Breed, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews and sales, and earned him Lyricist of the Year at the 2001 Source Awards.^[2]

In 2002, he released The Fix, the follow up to The Last of a Dying Breed and returned to the studio with the Geto Boys for their album, The Foundation. He was also featured on The Biggie Duets alongside Big Gee and Akon. He guest-appeared on Ray Cash’s debut single “Bumpin’ My Music”.

In addition to his career as a lyricist, Scarface has also been the coordinator and president of Def Jam South since 2000, where he has fostered the career of popular rapper Ludacris, whom he originally signed to the label.^[3]

Scarface has appeared on Freeway’s album Free at Last and will appear on Beanie Sigel’s album, The Solution. Scarface is currently planning production; he has produced three tracks on UGK’s Underground Kingz: “Life in 2009,” “Still Ridin’ Dirty,” and “Candy.”

Some of Scarface’s early music videos (”A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die”) featured community activist Quanell X in supporting roles.

In 2008, Scarface collaborated with rapper Tech N9ne on his album Killer on the song “Pillow Talkin’”.

Despite limited commercial appeal, he remains uniquely popular amongst those in the industry, and has been described as “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper”.^[4]. On August 6, 2009 Scarface performed at the 2009 Gathering of the Juggalos. In 2005, comedian Chris Rock praised Scarface as one of the best three rappers of all time on his list of the Top-25 Hip-Hop Albums ever. “^[5]

Former Fugees Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill are scheduled to perform at a music festival in New Zealand, in January, according to reports.

Though the estranged former groupmates (and rumored lovers) are scheduled to perform separate sets at the Ragamuffin Music Festival, in Rotorua, New Zealand on Jan. 23, it will mark the first time they’ve shared a stage in years.

The co-booking is also notable given ‘Clef’s recent comments regarding a potential Fugees reunion. “Somehow, The Fugees is the soundtrack to everyone’s house,” Wyclef said in an interview with DJBooth.net. “What I’m hoping is that this group really gets inspired by the new movement that I’m on right now. I’m hoping they’ll get inspired and be like, ‘Yo, let’s find Clef and let’s get this thing cracking.’ And it would be an honor to go in and make it a super album.”

The Ragamuffin Festival will be Hill’s first performance since she canceled her 2009 tour in June, citing health reasons. Wyclef filled in those dates, headlining the prestigious Stockholm and Montreux Jazz Festivals.

Though the Fugees only released two albums, their second release, ‘The Score,’ has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and a followup has been highly-anticipated/allegedly in the works for years.

The Ragamuffin Festival also boasts performances by Julian Marley, Sly & Robbie, Sean Kingston, Shaggy and many more.

Assuming that any fan is able to get past the awesomeness of the title for Dru Hill’s fourth studio album, Indrupendence Day, they might bother themselves with the question of what’s inside.

For InDRUpendence Day, Dru Hill reunited with longtime producer Keith Sweat, probably attempting to capture some of that late 90s magic that gained them notoriety in the first place. The group’s probably hurting from the loss last year of two of their members, Woody and Scola, but new member Antwuan “Tao” Simpson is there to try and fill that void (like it matters anyway, all the fans care about is Sisqo).
