A year ago, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library added half a dozen or so eReaders to its collection at Lee Road Library.

Heights Libraries has decided to expand that program and now offers Nooks and Kindles at the Coventry Village, Noble Neighborhood and University Heights libraries.

The idea is that patrons can “try it before they buy it” and learn to use the devices.

“Our customers have been clamoring for more eReaders,” said Heights Libraries Deputy Director Kimberlee DeNero-Ackroyd in a press release. “Circulating these devices serves several purposes: It gives customers an opportunity to try these products and make more informed purchasing decisions, it provides library customers an opportunity to try a different reading experience, and it also allows us to experiment with new ways of serving our customers.”

Coventry, University Heights and Noble branches will circulate three eReaders and offer both Nooks and Kindles, and the Lee Road Library now has nine eReaders. Popular books are already downloaded on the devices, including Bossypants by Tina Fey, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

By Davide Germaine

Posted January 30th 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Deep South drama “The Help” won three prizes Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including best actress for Viola Davis and supporting actress for Octavia Spencer.

“The Help” also claimed the guild’s ensemble award, the show’s equivalent of a best-picture prize.

Davis and Spencer won as black maids going public with uneasy truths about their white employers in 1960s Mississippi.

Jean Dujardin won the lead-actor honor for “The Artist” as a silent-film superstar whose career crumbles when the sound era arrives. Christopher Plummer won for supporting actor as an elderly dad who comes out as gay in “Beginners.”

The wins boost the actors’ prospects for the same honors at the Feb. 26 Academy Awards.

Plummer would become the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar at age 82, two years older than Jessica Tandy when she won best actress for “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Backstage, Plummer joked about whether he would like to win an Oscar, an honor so elusive during his esteemed 60-year career that he did not even receive his first Academy Award nomination until two years ago, for “The Last Station.”

“No, I think it’s frightfully boring,” Plummer said. “That’s an awful question. Listen, we don’t go into this business preoccupied by awards. If we did, we wouldn’t last five minutes.”

Spencer, a veteran actress who had toiled in small TV and movie parts previously, had a breakout role in “The Help” as a brassy maid whose mouth continually gets her in trouble.

“I’m going to dedicate this to the downtrodden, the under-served, the underprivileged, overtaxed — whether emotionally, physically or financially,” Spencer said.

On the television side, comedy series awards went to “Modern Family” for best ensemble; Alec Baldwin as best actor for “30 Rock”; and Betty White as best actress for “Hot in Cleveland.”

“You can’t name me, without naming those other wonderful women on ‘Hot in Cleveland,’” the 90-year-old White said. “This nomination belongs to four of us. Please, please know that I’m dealing them right in with this. I’m not going to let them keep this, but I’ll let them see it.”

The TV drama show winners were: Jessica Lange as best actress for “American Horror Story”; and Steve Buscemi as best actor for “Boardwalk Empire,” which also won the ensemble prize.

For TV movie or miniseries, Kate Winslet won as best actress for “Mildred Pierce,” while Paul Giamatti was named best actor for “Too Big to Fail.”

Before the official ceremony, the Screen Actors Guild presented its honor for best film stunt ensemble to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” The TV stunt award went to “Game of Thrones.”

The winners at the SAG ceremony typically go on to earn Oscars. All four acting recipients at SAG last year later took home Oscars — Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech,” Natalie Portman for “Black Swan” and Christian Bale and Melissa Leo for “The Fighter.”

The same generally holds true for the weekend’s other big Hollywood honors, the Directors Guild of America Awards, where Michel Hazanavicius won the feature-film prize Saturday for “The Artist.” The Directors Guild winner has gone on to earn the best-director Oscar 57 times in the 63-year history of the union’s awards show.

The guild’s ensemble prize, considered the ceremony’s equivalent of a best-picture honor, has a spotty record at predicting what will win the top award at the Oscars.

While “The King’s Speech” won both honors a year ago, the SAG cast recipient has gone on to claim the top Oscar only eight times in the 16 years since the guild added the category.

Though “The Help” won the ensemble prize this time, “The Artist” and George Clooney’s family drama “The Descendants” are considered stronger contenders for the best-picture Oscar.

Mary Tyler Moore received the guild’s lifetime-achievement award, an honor presented to her by Dick Van Dyke, her co-star on the 1960s sit-com “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”

SAG President Ken Howard put in a plug during the show for the guild’s planned merger with another Hollywood union, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. The boards of both groups have approved the merger, and ballots will be sent to members of each union.

“As one union, SAG-AFTRA will support a future of great entertainment for all of us,” Howard said.

Don’t ask Chris Rock about Newt Gingrich. The comic destroyed a videographer’s camera at Tao at Sundance, the scene of a Google bash and Jonny Lennon’s 4am Funday soiree, in the early hours of Monday when he was ambushed with a string of political questions after being asked to pose for a picture. A spy tells us, “A guy walked up to Chris and his entourage and said, ‘Hey, could I get a photo of you with my girlfriend?’ When he turned around, he found a video camera in his face, asking him about Gingrich.” Another spy said: “Chris pushed the interviewer and grabbed the camera. He smashed it so hard, it broke into pieces. He cursed the guy for filming when he had asked them to stop.” Another witness said that after smashing the camera, Rock asked him, “Did you get your shot?” Security escorted the video guy out, and Rock left peacefully, we’re told. Rock’s rep declined to comment.

Cleveland Play House has introduced the newly constructed ‘Second Stage’ theatre to Greater Clevelanders with the grand opening of Jeffrey Hatcher’s ‘Ten Chimneys,’ the personal and artistic retreat for the legendary husband and wife theatrical acting team Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt. Margot Peters biography of the Lunts describes their ‘trademark technique consisted of overlapping each other’s lines, various muggings, smirkings, hesitations, interrupting and circling around each other, nudging and mocking — intimate byplay their audiences found sexy and charming.’ Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt enjoyed a marriage and theatrical team career that spanned over fifty-five years.

(PHOTO: MARIETTE HARTLEY, FILM AND TELEVISION CHARACTER ACTRESS AS HATTIE SEDERHOLM)

‘Ten Chimneys’ is a fast paced comedy depicting an artistic session with Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt at their lavish estate ‘Ten Chimneys’ in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Hatcher chose Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’ as the playwright of the session in question. Uta Hagen did appear in the 1938 performance of ‘The Seagull’ with the Lunts.

Hatcher’s choice of Chekhov alludes to the temperamental relationship and lifestyle of the Lunts. Chekhov’s style is known for its dramatic subtext…skirting around issues and not addressing them directly. And so the case with Ten Chimneys’ as it alludes to Alfred Lunts’ excessive attachment to his mother and her constant interference in his personal life. A sea of innuendo including whether Alfred Lunt and Uta Hagen were having an affair? Was Alfred Lunt bisexual? Did Lynn and Alfred Lunt entertain ménage a trois trysts? Was Alfred and Lynn’s marriage an ongoing stage performance?

In reality the answers are yes! Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne’s lives were an ever evolving stage play. ‘Ten Chimneys’ was a theatrical set. Their exuberant parties were stage shows and their friends were the audience. Noel Coward a close protege to the Lunts wrote ‘Design For Living,’ for him and the Lunts to perform. It is a story about a ménage a trois with two men and women. Uta Hagen was only nineteen years old in the 1938 performance of ’The Seagull,’ yet she was of legal age.

These are only some of the mind boggling perplexities that Hatcher has created with ‘Ten Chimneys.’ Michael Bloom’s directorial mastery extols the consignment and timing of these eccentricities. The seasoned cast of only seven breathes life into Hatcher and Blooms vision and their performances are seamless. Finally, a warm welcome for film and television character actress Mariette Hartley to the Cleveland theatrical stage in this outstanding presentation of ‘Ten Chimneys.’

‘Ten Chimneys’ run of show is through February 5th 2012. ‘Second Stage’ is an intimate, interactive theatre that makes you feel like you are a part of the performance. Cleveland Play House at PlayhouseSquare…I love it!

Posted January 22nd 2012

One of the perks of being president is the opportunity to live in the White House, a 132-room mansion — complete with bowling alley and private movie theater. So what’s it like to actually attend a screening there? According to “Red Tails” director, Anthony Hemingway, the theater could use some work.

Hemingway, the “Red Tails” cast, producer George Lucas and surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, were recently invited to the White House to screen the WWII action feature for the First Family. Writing about it in this week’s Hollywood Reporter, the director discussed the generous hospitality provided by President Obama and the rest of his staff.

After an extensive background check (of course), the guests showed up to the White House. There, they were treated to a meet-and-greet by the Commander-in-Chief himself, where they took pictures and went on a private tour. Obama also gave a touching introduction before the film began.

However, the theater wasn’t as presidential as you’d expect.

“When they escort you into the theater, you definitely feel like you’re in a very comfy, intimate space. But it doesn’t have cup holders, which made me nervous because I was afraid of spilling my drink … The theater isn’t set up that well. The sound could be better. The projector needs to be upgraded. It needs a Hollywood pro to go in there and redesign it.”

A Hollywood pro? Perhaps a certain “Star Wars” creator who developed the surround sound company, THX? (That’s a George Lucas reference, if you haven’t figured it out.)

Where the theater lacked in sound quality, it made up in popcorn. “It had just the right amount of salt and butter,” Hemingway said. “It was some of the best popcorn I’ve ever tasted.”

The White House: Great popcorn, bad surround sound.

Idris Elba of “Luther” won the Golden Globe award for actor in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for television. Elba beat out Hugh Bonneville of “Downton Abbey,” William Hurt of “Too Big to Fail,” Bill Nighy of “Page Eight” and Dominic West of “The Hour” for the award.

Elba plays antihero detective John Luther in the series on BBC America. His “Luther” character is able to identify a killer at 10 paces but has suffered a mental breakdown, which resulted from the flawed decision of chasing down a pedophile. Elba has also appeared in “The Wire, ” “The Office” and the film “Thor.”

The Golden Globes were at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday and were televised on NBC. We’ll carry all the breaking TV news and reaction here on Show Tracker.

Octavia Spencer was named best supporting actress at the 69th Golden Globes Sunday for her turn as the sharp-tongued maid Minny Jackson in the civil rights era drama “The Help,” based on Kathryn Stockett’s novel. Spencer was nominated in the category alongside her “Help” costar Jessica Chastain.

“I was scared to death to play [Minny],” Spencer told The Times last year. “They hyped it up to the studio: “She’d be great, she’d be great,” and then I’m thinking I don’t know if I’d be great… When I finally stopped judging Minny and I embraced her, then I was happy.”

By Harry R. Weber

Posted December 29th 2011

ATLANTA — The Coca-Cola Co. has made its secret formula the centerpiece of a new exhibit at its corporate museum, ditching the confines of the bank vault where the list of ingredients had been stored since 1925.

The world’s largest beverage maker said Thursday a new vault containing the formula will be on display for visitors to its World of Coca-Cola museum in downtown Atlanta. However, the formula itself, which dates back to 1886, will remain hidden from view.

Atlanta-based Coca-Cola said the decision to move the formula from a vault at SunTrust Banks Inc. had nothing to with the bank’s decision in 2007 to begin selling its long-held stake in Coca-Cola. The bank, which provided underwriting coca services to Coca-Cola when it went public in 1919 and received some of Coca-Cola’s first publicly traded stock, at one time held more than 48 million Coca-Cola shares.

“The time has come for our secret formula to come back home,” CEO Muhtar Kent told employees and city and state officials who were on hand for the unveiling of the exhibit, which comes as the company celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.

Coca-Cola is all about marketing, and that was on full display at the museum Thursday.

Attendees watched a video of Kent placing a metal box, which the company says contains the formula, inside a five-foot high safe several days ago and locking it. Visitors were then escorted through a room full of pictures and historical information about the founding of the company and the secret formula. That display leads into a cylindrical room, where images of glasses filling with Coca-Cola splash across the walls before lights come on and reveal a giant, metal-encased vault with a keypad and a hand-imprint scanner.

A railing keeps visitors several feet away from the vault door. The vault never opens, and Coke officials wouldn’t say if the keypad and hand scanner were there for show or were part of the security measures in place to protect the formula the company says is inside.

Several executives from SunTrust were on hand for the opening of the exhibit. Bank spokesman Mike McCoy said SunTrust was honored to safeguard the formula for as long as it did. He said the relationship between Coca-Cola and SunTrust has enriched the bank’s history. “We’re celebrating this as well,” McCoy said.

In May 2007, SunTrust said it had sold 9 percent of its holdings in Coca-Cola stock as part of a plan to return value to its own shareholders. The following year, the bank sold another batch of shares and said that its remaining 30 million Coca-Cola shares were to be put into a structured transaction to be sold in seven years.

Emmy®-award Winning Actress Mariette Hartley Stars in Backstage Comedy!

CLEVELAND, OH (December 14, 2011) – Cleveland Play House (CPH) is thrilled to produce Jeffrey Hatcher’s backstage comedy Ten Chimneys as the inaugural production in the new Second Stage, one of only three fully outfitted, flexible theatres in the nation. Ten Chimneys peeks into the private lives of theatre legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne at their secluded Wisconsin retreat where they often entertained the titans of Broadway and Hollywood – including Noël Coward, Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier. In this comedy, a young starlet arrives to rehearse the Lunts’ latest production, Chekhov’s The Seagull, and unwittingly ignites a romantic triangle that eclipses any on-stage drama. The CPH production of Ten Chimneys, starring Emmy® award-winning actress Mariette Hartley, will begin in the Second Stage at PlayhouseSquare on Friday, January 13 and run through Sunday, February 5, 2012. Tickets are available at PlayhouseSquare ticket office by calling 216-241-6000 or online at www.clevelandplayhouse.com. Ten Chimneys is presented with support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the Ohio Arts Council.

Mariette Hartley

“I can’t think of a better way to open our fantastic Second Stage than with a play about two American theatre legends, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne,” states Michael Bloom, CPH Artistic Director. “We will be celebrating their artistic home, Ten Chimneys, in our new artistic home, the Second Stage in the Allen Theatre Complex at PlayhouseSquare.

ABOUT THE PLAY

“Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were universally regarded as the greatest acting team in the history of the English speaking theatre. They were married for 55 years and were inseparable both on and off the stage.” So reads the epitaph on the Milwaukee graves of Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne, the couple whose stage performances delighted generations of theatre-goers in the early and middle 20th century. While the Lunts are considered theatre royalty, because they were determined to make their career in theatre rather than film, their legacy is preserved not on celluloid, but in the minds of those fortunate enough to have seen them perform live.

The Lunts in Cleveland

During their time as America’s premier acting couple, the Lunts made multiple appearances in Cleveland, beginning in the 1920s and continuing until their farewell tour with The Visit in 1959. By far, the Lunts’ most anticipated visit to Cleveland occurred in January 1933, when the couple acted with Noël Coward in the world premiere of his controversial comedy Design for Living.

About Ten Chimneys

For much of the 20th century, Ten Chimneys (in Genesee Depot, Wisconsin) was considered the center of the theatrical world – an important place for artistic creation, discussion, mentorship and inspiration. Every summer, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne returned home to their beloved Ten Chimneys. And, every summer, they reveled in welcoming close friends. The Lunts’ idyllic retreat beguiled and inspired the country’s finest actors, writers and artists: Noël Coward, Helen Hayes, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Julie Harris, John Gielgud, Katharine Hepburn, and Alexander Woollcott. Carol Channing was fond of saying, “What the Vatican is to Catholics, Ten Chimneys is to actors.” In 2003 (after nearly being lost to development), Ten Chimneys opened to the public as a world-class house museum and a national resource for theater, the arts and the art of living. For more information, go to www.tenchimneys.org.

ABOUT SECOND STAGE

As one of only three venues in the country, the Second Stage has a system for flying scenery, a floor with a trap, premium seating and the flexibility of a black box space. Custom-designed, rolling seating carriages allow Second Stage to change into multiple audience configurations (i.e. arena-style seating, runway-style seating, thrust-style seating, and more) in a matter of hours. It affords CPH the opportunity to fit the venue to the play rather than adapt the play to the venue. With only seven rows of seats, the Second Stage continues a CPH trademark for enhancing the quality of the entire theatre experience – including intimate settings that facilitate interaction between spectators and performers.

TEN CHIMNEYS cast:

Anchoring the cast is Emmy® award-winning actress Mariette Hartley, who will play the role of Hattie Sederholm, mother of Alfred Lunt. Hartley has performed in Cabaret on Broadway; Ancestral Voices, Lincoln Center; Sylvia, Manhattan Theatre Company; Enchanted April, Pasadena Playhouse; and national tours of the The Sisters Rosenzweig and Copenhagen (Helen Hayes Award and League of American Theatres and Producers National Touring Broadway Award). Hartley has over 300 film and television appearances including Law & Order: SVU, Dirt, Grey’s Anatomy, Big Love, Star Trek and M*A*S*H. Hartley is a three-time Clio Award-winner for her Polaroid commercials with James Garner. The role of the legendary stage actor Alfred Lunt will be performed by actor Donald Carrier, who previously appeared at CPH in Noises Off (2008) and Lincolnesque (2007). Regional credits include The Old Globe, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, The Wilma Theater, Huntington and Intiman Theatres, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, and Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Making her CPH debut, Jordan Baker will perform the role of Lynn Fontanne, wife to Alfred. Baker created the role of C in Edward Albee’s 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Three Tall Women and received a Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly, Last Summer. Also making his CPH debut, Michael McCarty will perform the role of Sydney Greenstreet, based on the real character actor. McCarty appeared on Broadway in Mary Poppins, To Be or Not to Be, Oklahoma! (2002 revival), 42nd Street (2001 revival), Amadeus, King of Hearts, Teddy & Alice, Sweeney Todd (1989 revival), Big River, Oliver! (1984 revival), and Dirty Linen. Actor Jeremy Kendall will perform the role of Carl Sederholm. Kendall was at CPH this season playing the role of A Little Monk in The Life of Galileo. The role of Uta Hagen, also based on the real stage and film actress and educator, will be performed by Kelli Ruttle, who has been seen in Case Western Reserve University/CPH MFA Acting Program productions of Present Laughter, An Orchard and Cloud 9. Making her CPH debut, Gail Rastorfer will perform the role of Louise Greene. Her regional credits include Northlight Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Goodman Theatre, and Indiana Repertory Theatre.
