SATURDAY JANUARY 14TH 2012 8P

STATE THEATRE

Kem has carved a niche for himself in the music world. His jazz-influenced contemporary R&B vocal styles are claiming a loyal following in an African-American musical environment dominated by hip-hop sounds. Signed to the Motown Label with a five album deal, Kem stood ready to make music rooted in his own experiences. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, his birth name was Kim Owens; the “Kem” spelling was a mistake on an associate’s part that the singer adopted because he thought it sounded distinctive and marketable.

Kem’s family moved from Tennessee to the Detroit suburb of Southfield, Michigan, when he was young. When he was four, he began to explore the keyboard. A babysitter taught him to play the harmonically ambitious “Color My World,” by the pop group Chicago. “I played that song for about three years straight,” Kem told Cleveland’s Scene Entertainment Weekly. Influenced by R&B giants of the day like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and by jazzpop-stars Steely Dan and Grover Washington Jr., Kem became fascinated by music in high school and sang in the choir. Estranged from his family during the period when he was homeless, he reconciled himself with them, and they supported him strongly when he returned to music once again. Word of his talents continued to build, and version two of Kemistry sold an impressive 10,000 copies over a five-month period which got the attention of executives at the Motown label, who signed Kem and released Kemistry for the third time. Kem took to the road nationally; and the album cracked the top 20 of Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B Albums chart.

TREY SONGZ

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9TH 2012 7:30P

STATE THEATRE

There are entertainers who sing for their people and then there are singers who speak for their generation. Stevie spoke for hearts and souls; Marvin crooned for his country; Fela sent the rhythm of Africa abroad; Curtis gave the ghetto a voice. Artists come a dime a dozen, but a spokesman for the masses who’s been bestowed with a voice from the heavens, once every generation. With Songbook/Atlantic Records R&B blessing Trey Songz, the first generation to come of age in the 21st century has one they can claim as their own.

One thing that Trey does better than any young R&B artist today is to create songs that resonate with fans regardless of gender, race, age, or residency. His music soars above categorization. You’ll be hard-pressed to find many who can’t relate to the gorgeous “Last Time.” With production by R&B sure-shot Bryan-Michael Cox, Trey documents the challenges of monogamy and the complexities of infidelity in one final episode with his female on the side. The song is beautiful. It’s ugly. It’s common. It’s special. It’s human.

Sunday January 8th 2012 7p

House of Blues

Wale is a 24-year old rapper who rides for the “DMV” – DC, Maryland and Virginia – and who in turn enjoys support from the likes of Jay-Z, Mark Ronson, Pharrell, The Roots, Bun B, and The Clipse. The son of Nigerian immigrants, Wale cut his teeth in the unforgiving Northwest district of DC. Desperate to find quieter environs, Wale’s parents moved to the Maryland suburbs when he was a teen. But the changes didn’t stop there; in all, Wale spent time in seven different high schools scattered about the DC/Maryland area. “I kind of understand the plight of all people, from understanding all those different environments,” he says. “My first high school was a predominantly black school, then I went to a predominantly white school, and then back again. I think that helped me cultivate an open mind about most things in life.”

Having met every challenge, and exceeded every expectation, Wale is poised as hip-hop’s next innovator. He’s already amassed much early press (Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, The Fader, MTV, allhiphop.com, VIBE and covers of XXL, URB and DNR). His recent mixtapes, produced by Nick Catchdubs, have earned heaps of praise. And his peers echo the plaudits: “Jay-Z told me, ‘If it feels right, do it. Don’t go by demographics,’ reports Wale. “I reassured him, saying ‘I never do anything by demographics.’ I guess it’s just my upbringing.” The world can thank that very upbringing for the wunderkind that is Wale.

Estelle was born in Hammersmith, London, England. Born of a Senegalese mother and father from Grenada, Estelle grew up in West London in a large family of eight brothers and sisters and an extended family of cousins. During childbirth, Estelle’s mother had a near death experience, which influenced Estelle’s choice for her first album title, The 18th Day

Her mum was a huge reggae fan and her dad built home made speaker cabinets. She spent her childhood listening to her parent’s reggae records and her aunt’s soul collection. Then she discovered Hip Hop. “I got into Hip Hop from my uncle, he was always playing us Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane; he was a bad boy and my mum wasn’t really happy that I was hanging out with him”

JANUARY 19TH —JANUARY 22ND 2012

Comedian Dean Edwards had two successful seasons as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” With such memorable impressions as Don Cheadle, Michael Jackson and Denzel Washington, as well as such original characters as “Man in Elevator” and “Cop#2?, Dean made his mark on a national audience. Come see his standup up close and you will laugh until it hurts.

Michael Colyar is old school funny. Here is an interesting factoid: Michael was the first comedian on the original Cleveland Improv stage over 23 years ago. Michael has been seen in the hit movies like “Norbit”, “Who Made The Potato Salad?” and “”Barbershop”. Michael performs with all the great comedians working today. He is like a father figure to them and his credits are a mile long.
