East Cleveland, a suburb steeped in political turmoil and facing an uncertain future, now has a list of candidates who want to be its next mayor.

After a recall in December, Brandon King has been serving as acting mayor, taking over from the former mayor, Gary Norton. Six people filed to challenge King for the post he wants to keep.

East Cleveland remains in a fiscal state of emergency, according to the state auditor’s office. Merger talks have not moved forward since the recall.

Among the East Cleveland candidates is Devin Branch, an activist who collected signatures to recall Norton. He was recently cleared of a charge that he assaulted the former mayor. He was also appointed to council in January, but the city’s law director and mayor called his and Kelvin Earby’s appointments unlawful, and the mayor replaced them.

Una Keenon, who is currently serving as president of the East Cleveland school board, and Mansell Baker, a former council member, also are among the seven mayoral candidates.

Mayoral Candidates:

Mansell Baker

Dana Hawkin Jr

Dr Una H.R. Keenon

Brandon L. King

Kari Oatman

Korean Stevenson

Devin Branch
